After more than 30 years of planning, building and testing, the Large Hadron Collider is providing answers that could fundamentally change the way in which we understand the universe.

CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, has revealed its preliminary data analysis today at the site of the collider in Geneva – with the revelation that a new sub-atomic particle consistent with the elusive Higgs boson has been discovered.

Named after its inceptor, Professor Peter Higgs, the boson may provide an answer to the long standing mystery of why objects have mass. As the momentous news was announced this morning Professor Higgs shed tears of joy.

He said in a statement: “I never expected this to happen in my lifetime and shall be asking my family to put some champagne in the fridge.”

But how did research undertaken decades ago by a British professor culminate in the announcement of the so called “God particle”?

Building blocks

After completing a degree and masters in physics, Newcastle-born Peter Higgs moved to Edinburgh in 1960 to take up lectureship and continue his research. Four years later he arrived at a breakthrough, proposing the existence of a subatomic particle that could explain how mass works.

Professor Higgs said that the finding did not come to him in a ‘eureka’ moment, but instead it was one that fermented over a period of time.

Professor Peter Higgs’ work inspired CERN’s £6bn Large Hadron Collider.

“By the summer of 1964 I knew I was on to something,” he told Der Spiegel. “That was perhaps the reason, because my head was full of thoughts, that I forgot the instructions for putting up the tent when we went for a camping trip in the Scottish mountains”.

After returning to the University of Edinburgh, Professor Higgs wrote his seminal paper “Broken Symmetries and the Masses of Gauge Bosons”, published in ‘Physical Review Letters’.

As it turned out, Professor Higgs was not the only physicist to propose such a theory.

A paper written by Robert Brout and Francois Englert [“Broken Symmetry and the Mass of Gauge Vector Mesons”] and another authored by Gerald Guralnik, C. Richard Hagen and Tom Kibble [“Global Conservation Laws and Massless Particles”] touched upon the same principles – all three theories paving the way for the ambitious work at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.

Put into practice

Oddly enough, Professor Higgs’ landmark work almost never saw the light of day as it was initially rejected by the editor of ‘Physics Letters’, who failed to see its importance. Higgs tinkered with his exposition and sent the piece to ‘Physical Review Letters’, who published it later that year.

Despite a mass of intrigue surrounding the work of Higgs and his contemporaries, it was not until 1976 that CERN’s Professor John Ellis hinted that the research should be put to the test. What followed was 36 years of conception and construction of the Large Hadron Collider- a £6bn project to find the elusive Higgs boson.

The world’s largest atom smasher, the Large Hadron Collider.

Built beneath the Swiss/French border at Geneva, the mammoth collider extends more than 16.5m in a circular tunnel – a complex system which took a decade to build. Since its initiation in 2008, the collider has encountered a number of technical problems, but physicists captured a hint of the boson’s existence late last year, although more data was needed for confirmation.

In essence the Large Hadron Collider was built to create the ideal conditions to produce evidence of the Higgs boson. The collider contains 1200 magnets cooled to -271C, which accelerate protons to 99.9% of the speed of light. At this speed the protons then ‘collide’, creating thousands of new particles.

Physicists believe that for every billion collisions 10 Higgs bosons are created, although it is a fine art to measure.

“We have reached a milestone in our understanding of nature,” said CERN Director General Rolf Heuer today.

He pointed out, though, that further work was needed to identify what exactly had been found.

“As a layman I would say we have it, but as a scientist I have to say, ‘what do we have?'” Heuer told a press conference.

“We have discovered a boson, and now we have to determine what kind of boson it is.”

Finding the Higgs would validate the Standard Model, a theory which identifies the building blocks for matter and the particles that convey fundamental forces.

It is a hugely successful theory but has several gaps, the biggest of which is why some particles have mass but others do not.

I, too, had a shameful lapse when our children were small … I bet if for the likes of you and I done such misjudgement we would be up for a lot of sticks from John public, just to show no one’s perfect. Daughter, what daughter? David Cameron enjoys a pint. Photograph: Associated Newspape/Mark Large On hearing that David Cameron accidentally left his eight-year-old daughter behind in a Buckinghamshire pub, many parents will have tutted disapprovingly. Not me. Tutting is a luxury only afforded to people who haven’t done something similar. My own shameful lapse happened when our three children were small, the youngest of an age still measured in weeks, but I remember it well enough: after an exhausting and largely unsuccessful trip to the market, my wife is ready to give up, but I am determined to visit the fish shop. “I’m taking these two to the playground,” she says. “Meet us there.” She leaves me at the back of the queue with the pram. The pram takes up a lot of room in the queue, so I push it to one side, out of the way of the men hauling boxes of fish across the slippery floor, but close enough where I can keep an eye while I wait. I want to be the sort of person who has an easy rapport with fishmongers, but in reality I am the sort of person fishmongers sell unwanted fish to. I’m both highly suggestible and eager to give some impression of expertise. I haven’t slept for a month, and I don’t know what I want. When I walk out of the shop with two big bags, I am worried about how I will explain my purchases to my wife. I am specifically wondering how to answer the question: “Why did you buy two-dozen goose barnacles?” I can’t say, “Because I wanted the man to think I knew what they were.” To my surprise this is not the first question my wife asks me when I show up at the playground. The first question she asks is: “Where is the baby?” For a brief second I have no idea what she’s talking about. What baby? Then I drop my barnacles and run, as fast as I can, all the way back to the fish shop. By the time I got there the queue was all new people, and I realised they must have all thought someone else in the shop responsible for the pram in the window. My only worry was how I, red-faced and panting, was going to look running in there and snatching a baby. I didn’t wait around to find out what anybody thought. Having three children is a logistical nightmare. It’s easy to lose track of one, especially when you try to divide the labours of parenting. My only advice is: do a headcount every hour or so, and always chec

Studies on men wearing tight pant’s and infertility, with some doctors suggesting that the practice could be a contributor to low sperm count.
In 2009, Malaysian fertility specialist, Dr V Jeyabalan, in a study, blamed late marriages in women and tight pants in men, as the reason for the decline in Malaysia’s birth rate.

1/1
In the study, involving 30 couples seeking to have their first child, he said tight pants, and also the presence of petrol fumes and chemicals around their workplaces, generally reduce fertility among men.
Locally, Dr Leroy Harrison, president of the Jamaica Urological Society, said the testes hang outside the body to keep them cool, as cool temperature helps in the production of sperm, so theoretically, wearing of tight pants could heat up the scrotum and possibly contribute to low sperm count.
“So if people wear too many layers — if the guys have on underpants, shorts and pants, we think that it will increase the temperature in that area,” Dr Harrison said. “Tight pants are probably not loose enough to allow proper circulation and keep the area cool. So theoretically, it is possible. Tight pants probably help to keep the area warm by not allowing the best circulation.”
Dr Harrison said he would certainly advise men against wearing tight pants.
“If it is going to be tight, it is supposed to be of a certain material. The material is supposed to be able to breathe,” he said.
It is believed that more than 90 per cent of male infertility cases are due to sperm abnormalities like low sperm count, poor sperm quality, or both.
Urologist Dr Richard Mayhew said the problem of infertility in men is most times due to sperm quality.
“You can have a wide variety of things. You can have variation in the number of sperm… usually the concern is a low count — it can be low or the sperm can be completely absent.”
A sperm count of less than 20 million/ml is considered low.
“But if somebody comes in with low sperm count and they are wearing briefs, telling them to switch to boxers is not going to solve the problem,” Dr Mayhew said.
Dr Mayhew said one-third of the infertility cases he has seen are related to problems with the male partner, one-third are related to the female, and one-third are a combination of both.

My Boyfriend Is Type B (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

My dead boyfriend won’t leave me alone! This is the cry of a 32-year-old woman who claims that her deceased boyfriend has caused the death of a toddler and the abrupt end to her romantic relationship.

Dionne Bailey* reasoned with THE WEEKEND STAR yesterday that since the death of 25-year-old Harry Jackson, her life has never been the same and she is now a nomad.

So acquainted is Bailey with his spirit, she now believes that the spirit is offering her protection.

Jackson was shot dead due to gun violence in Trench Town, St Andrew last September.

THE WEEKEND STAR understands that since Jackson’s death, the young hairdresser, who has four children, has been suffering from sleepless nights, and a troubled conscience.

“I was living in a tenement yard at the time and right after he died people started complaining that they feel ill. He was everywhere in the yard. Him knock out a baby in di yard and di baby started to mess on himself. Dem carry him to the hospital but the doctors couldn’t find out what was the problem and he died,” Bailey reasoned.

According to Bailey, the mother of the dead toddler has blamed her for her son’s death. “Di mother of the baby said it’s my fault because if I never run into her house for rescue when mi boyfriend spirit a trouble me, her son would not have died,” she said.

Bailey, who also claims that she has been constantly moving since her boyfriend’s death, said that even her grandfather has told her not to come back to his house because of the spirit.

The spirit the grandfather told Bailey, has caused several persons in his household to be ill.

THE WEEKEND STAR also understands that Bailey’s sister also had a first hand experience with the spirit.

frankincense and myrrh

“Him make me sick already because just after he died him play up inna mi food and mek me sick. Mi notice one day my meal was slimy and me know say a him. Somebody told me not to go to the doctor cause I might die so I had to drink frankincense and myrrh for nine days to get better,” Joni Feron* told THE WEEKEND STAR.

Both women in separate interviews with our news team also complained about the spirit’s fiery pinches.

“Even one night since week when me a sleep mi feel like somebody come over me. When I wake up in the mornings my entire body sometimes full a pinch and swell up. I have a friend who I had to stay with because I was afraid and him pinch her up too. One of the pinches was so intense, the doctor even had to operate on her hand more than one time and they still cant diagnose the problem,” Bailey said.

THE WEEKEND STAR also understands that the spirit has even caused Bailey’s new romantic relationship to come to a premature end. “One day me and the guy who I was seeing at the time got into an argument and di spirit dream him and warn him off. My boyfriend at the time even complained that the spirit was moving his hand off my body when he would sleep with me. Me and him part ways from dat,” Bailey said.

Meanwhile, Bishop Joseph Ade-Gold of the Chambers of God International Church told THE WEEKEND STAR that the so called dead boyfriend’s spirit is an evil spirit.

“That lady has a demonic spouse who is following her around and that evil spirit doesn’t want anyone else around her. Those kinds of spirits may appear subtle but they are deadly,” the bishop said.

He further reasoned that Bailey’s case is not uncommon and, “The spirit can cause sudden death and other strange illnesses that doctors cannot diagnose. I would suggest that she finds a church that has a deliverance ministry so that she can get some help.”

The bishop believes that the demonic spirit has resurfaced in the form of Bailey’s dead boyfriend.

Behind each picture lies a story, a story of a family struggling to put pieces of a puzzle together, searching for clues to lead them to their loved ones. It’s a parent’s worst nightmare.

With an average of one child going missing every four hours, six families are added to the list of those trying to solve the mystery of the missing daily. It is no easy feat and definitely not for the faint of heart.

“Sometimes it’s hard, you know,” said Georgette Gordon, whose 14-year-old daughter Kadian Brown had been numbered among the missing until last month.

“Mi just want know weh mi daughter deh and dat she come home. … Mi trouble wid pressure (hypertension) enuh, an mi nah try fi mek it raise ’cause mi have di rest a kids dem fi look after,” she told The Gleaner a few weeks before Kadian’s return.

Gordon was one of hundreds of parents waiting for their child to come home. She waited for seven weeks.

Nation facing a Crisis

Between January 2011 and April 30 of this year, 2,796 children were reported missing. More than 300 of them have not been found.

Maxine Taylor-Cooper, the acting executive director of Hear The Children‘s Cry (HTCC), a non-governmental organisation which provides support for families of the missing, believes the nation is facing a crisis.

“It is a tragedy in our country that each year over a thousand children go missing, or are abducted, and murdered,” she told The Gleaner.

Detective Inspector Samuel Blake of the Organised Crime Investigation Division said the majority of missing children are runaways between ages 13 and 17, with approximately 75 per cent of them being girls.

“What we are picking up is that within the family setting, it is (caused by a) disquiet – issues of parenting, of children believing that at that age they need greater independence or there is just an absence of sufficient family support. That would lead some children to actually leave the house for a period of time,” he said.

Families get Counselling

Celta Kirkland, a family counsellor at HTCC, has conducted several counselling sessions, along with Taylor-Cooper, with the families of missing children and children who have returned home. On average, HTCC conducts six sessions with each family. Those who can make it to their offices get face-to-face counselling and those who cannot – especially those from rural areas – are counselled on the telephone. Through these sessions, Kirkland says she has learnt that issues within the home are proving to be a major push factor.

“A lot of them have stories about being abused. A lot of them are mentally abused at home and a few of them are sexually abused,” she said. “Most of them are unhappy at home. They will tell you they are unhappy as they don’t feel the parent loves them, they feel neglected, they don’t have money to buy necessary things – like even lunch money, bus fare, things like that – and they run away or they go missing because they think there is something out there better than what they have.”

Kirkland said most of the children who run away are from single-parent households. She said a lot of the cases involve women who are economically destitute, so they seek another ‘babyfather’ and get impregnated. He then goes away and does not support the child. The mother then finds another spouse and has another child. Soon, conflict arises among them, usually due to jealousy or the older ones getting tired of taking care of the younger ones, resulting in some of them leaving the household.

Kirkland believes that in order to solve the missing-children crisis, the problem of poor parenting has to be tackled.

“We haven’t been putting a lot of emphasis on parenting as it regards missing children, but a lot of emphasis has now to be put on that because we realise that a lot of parents don’t know how to parent. A lot of the parents are very young. They were teenagers when they had these children, so they don’t know much about parenting. That contributes to the problem of missing children,” she said.

Unsupervised

Another issue, Taylor-Cooper pointed out, is that when single parents go to work, their children are usually left exposed.

“We need to go back to community parenting, where the community helps to take care of the child. They (the parents) stay at home, who is going to take care of that child? Who is going to support that child?” she asked. “The whole family structure needs to be fixed.”

Taylor-Cooper believes Jamaica is too small for so many children to go missing.

“We are happy for the 90 per cent or the 80 per cent that return home, but what we are really concerned about is that each year the 200 or so that don’t come home, who nobody has ever seen or heard of,” Taylor-Cooper added. “Where are they? That’s the question. What has happened to them?

“If you are playing golf and one ball is gone, you make all effort to go and find it. You send that caddie to find your ball. It is just a ball. We’re talking about human beings here – our children. We have to take care of them … and we’re not doing a very good job, quite frankly.”

CHILDREN‘S Advocate Diahann Gordon Harrison has called for the names of sex offenders to be publicised in an effort to curb the crime, especially against children.

Gordon Harrison made the call against reports of more than 1,000 cases of sexual abuse of minors in April alone.

“I think we are at a time when we need to start naming the predators so that we can take proactive steps towards preventing further harm at the hands of these predators amongst our children,” she said. “These steps collectively will send a strong message to would-be perpetrators and may even act as a deterrent to those who have not yet committed the act.”

Speaking at the opening ceremony of Wednesday’s child abuse prevention workshop at the Wyndham hotel in Kingston, Gordon Harrison said such sick minds should not be allowed to continue to prey on children.

“I have had the privilege to sit in on a counselling session involving convicted sex offenders and when you look into their eyes and listen to some of the things they say, it will send chills down your spine,” Gordon Harrison disclosed.

She related the startling revelation by one of the offenders that he generally preyed on children from ages three to seven.

“He said that he did that ‘because people would be very slow to believe them and even if people believe them and it led to a charge, the judge would never buy their evidence because he had a way of staring at them and intimidating them so that the child begins to stutter and the child would start to appear as if he or she is no longer credible,” she related.

She said establishing a sex offenders registry would track such persons.

“What we are saying is that once a person is convicted of a sex offence, he or she should be excluded from working in certain places, specifically where children are located as in the case of teachers who are convicted and are allowed to re-enter other institutions,” Gordon Harrison emphasised.

“Sexual abuse is occurring everywhere and although reports might indicate that it is more popular among those of a lower socio-economic backgrounds, those who are on the other side are also affected,” she added.

She is also concerned that not all cases are reported, for fear of shame on the families.

But she emphasised that everyone has a moral obligation to ensure that no child is abused.

According to Gordon Harrison, there were more than 10,000 cases of sexual abuse against children between 2007 and 2011.

“Sexual abuse is occurring everywhere. It is in our schools, regrettably. We are seeing students on students, and even more troubling for me is that we are seeing teachers on students. It’s in our communities. There are the area dons who continue to be a significant feature in this particular area and there are other influential people who prey on our children and the churches are not to be outdone because we do have predators in our churches and also in our homes where children should feel very safe and very secure,” Gordon Harrison stressed.

She warned parents to be more selective in terms of who they leave their children with.

“Parents need to start cultivating a culture of trust between themselves and their children and let them know that they can talk to them about anything as nothing is no longer taboo,” she added.

Meantime, Gordon Harrison said the scope of sexual abuse has been widened with the introduction of the Sex Offenders Act to include offences such as sexual grooming, grievous sexual assault, and sexual touching. As such, she said that it is now a crime for older persons to make sexual advances at or send suggestive texts or e-mails to males or females below 16 or to engage in any inappropriate sexual act with them.

She said that Government has a major role to play in terms of implementing strong policies to ensure that the perpetrators are adequately punished when they are found guilty.

The Child Care and Protection Act, she said, is a step in the right direction but admitted that she was eagerly awaiting the proposed amendments to the Evidence Act that will admit video-recorded evidence in the courtroom.

Wednesday’s workshop, which was themed ‘Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children — Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Training, was hosted by the Women’s Leadership Initiative to increase awareness and expertise on the prevention of sexual abuse against children.

Participants included representatives of civic organisations, the public and private sector, child support agencies and human rights advocates.

Therefore becoming an Republic will certainly see Jamaica ex tint forever,    at least been a member of the Commonwealth will still see some form of help coming from America or Britten whenever they are in the time of needs.

POLICE end gay party – News – Jamaica Star – August 2, 2011. Isn’t time people realised that Gay’s be it man or woman have a right in society just as straight people in a relationship.

We can quote the scripture as much as we like but the bible was written by mankind, these people are only doing what any natural people would have done by having their party as long as they are not molesting anyone then they haven’t broken the law.

Who are we to judge, I think that people should wise up and get out of the dark age.

Time to accept the world and the people in it for what it is today.

AT LEAST six preparatory schools across the island have indicated to the Ministry of Education that they would not be reopening their doors come September because of financial constraints.

Education Minister Ronald Thwaites yesterday said the ministry would be meeting with the principals of the affected institutions to try to prevent the loss of the spaces.

“The last thing we want is to lose good school places and so we will be meeting with the principals,” Thwaites said.

Acting permanent secretary in the Ministry of Education, Grace McLean, said the ministry has received notification from the schools of their intention to cease operations at the end of the summer term.

The ministry, however, did not disclose the names of the schools.

“The principals are guided by the Private Schools Policy governing closure. The principals also secure placement in other private schools for a smooth transition. Parents are given sufficient notice in order to choose or decide on another educational institution for their child or children,” she indicated to The Gleaner.

She added that the management of one privately operated secondary school has indicated its intention to close the institution.

In the meantime, the Reverend Sylvester O’Gilvie, president of the Jamaica Independent Schools Association (JISA), said a number of schools are struggling to stay afloat.

O’Gilvie said that while some principals are trying to find the best way to ensure that their schools are efficient, it is an uphill task for others that just won’t be able to survive the financial challenges.

The JISA president painted a worrying picture of the challenges confronting the sector, as he pointed out that laying off of teachers could also be part of measures to keep the doors of the embattled institutions open.

“Most of the schools will not be increasing their fees in light of what is happening because we may push away prospective students from coming to the school. So we have to ensure that we follow our budget and if it means cutting staff, then we have to do it,” he explained.

He added that some schools are already running low on funds and are trying to find ways to continue throughout the summer period.

“Some of the private schools are facing challenges as this is the time no funds come in the system, and so they are preparing documents for the Ministry of Education so that they can access low-cost interest loans which will help them to operate,” he said.

Earlier this year, O’Gilvie had said independent schools need the ministry’s assistance in securing low-interest loans from financial institutions such as the Development Bank of Jamaica.

Yesterday, Marcia McCausland-Wilson, president of the National Parent-Teachers’ Association of Jamaica, expressed disappointment over the pending closure of the schools.

“It is a pity that they have to close because some primary schools don’t have the space, but the schools depend on the fees and the parents can’t afford it,” she said.

She urged the parents to step in and assist the preparatory schools that are struggling.

“The parent-teacher association should help by having fund-raising events and approach the private sector for assistance. It is a team effort that takes partnership and from some negative will come positive as the parents will understand that they need to do more to keep the schools going,” she said.

Veronica Carnegie, past president of JISA, has estimated that more than 50 independent schools have been forced to close their doors in recent years. Last year, St Cecelia Preparatory School, a privately run institution, closed its doors due to the challenges it faced.

A St Catherine woman is being accused of sexually molesting her teenage stepson, while he visited the house where his father lives.

The 39-year-old woman, who resides in an upscale St Catherine community, is said to have taken advantage of the 14-year-old boy during his visit.

sexual advance

It was revealed that the boy went to visit his father and during the visit the stepmom made a sexual advance towards to him.

She reportedly stripped off her clothes and proceeded to have sex with the teen. After the incident, the child is said to have made a complaint to family members and an investigation was launched.

As a result of the investigation by the Centre for Investigation of Sexual and Child Abuse, the woman was charged under the new act of 2010 with having sexually intercourse with a person under the age of 16.

She is scheduled to appear in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate‘s Court next week
